Sofia Sanchez: ‘word play/power play’
15th - 20th October 2022
Sofia Sanchez’s solo exhibition.
'Word Play/Power Play', a solo show by Sofia Sanchez. The exhibition is an invitation for viewers to ask themselves: What are the barriers to women gaining power in the world? How is your body constructed? Is social media truly empowering and democratic, particularly for young female entrepreneurs?
‘How to fight the unconscious structured like a language, while still caught within the language of patriarchy … there is no way we can produce an alternative out of the blue, but we can begin to make a break by examining patriarchy with the tools it provides’
Laura Mulvey, Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema
This is an exhibition centered around gender equality activism; it is a call to action. It asks the viewer to imagine a world beyond patriarchal and capitalist domination through using digital technology to try to imagine otherwise, to ask what if? Digital performance is used to re-present the politics of gender in the digital space, and to question postfeminist narratives around individual choice and empowerment in the context of brand culture. What are the barriers to women gaining power in the world? How is your body constructed? Is social media truly empowering and democratic, particularly for young female entrepreneurs? It asks for more vulnerability in society - more pleasure: ‘vulnerability is entangled with pleasure, when we wish it away, we are in danger’ (Katherine Angel), to think of a world beyond suffering, towards freedom.
‘The body is the ultimate site of resistance in everyday struggles for power’
Jane Tynan, Fashioning the Body Politic
